Where Vaporwave came from, what makes it recognisable, and the fingerprint it leaves.
2011–present · Internet, global; emerged on Tumblr and Bandcamp
Vaporwave emerged around 2010–2011 as a microgenre of electronic music on Tumblr and Bandcamp: artists like Macintosh Plus (Ramona Xavier) slowing down 1980s–90s corporate ambient and smooth jazz to near-drone tempo, with pitch-shifted vocals that turned elevator music into something both funny and haunting. The aesthetic that formed around this music drew from 1990s corporate multimedia (Windows 95, early internet clip art, CD-ROM graphics) and physical consumer culture (mall architecture, Sharper Image catalogs, Jamba Juice signage).
The color palette: lavender, mint, salmon, and electric teal against near-white: inverts synthwave's noir darkness into something pastel and dream-like. Where synthwave is kinetic and aspirational, vaporwave is disoriented and melancholic, mimicking the uncanny quality of revisiting a childhood memory that's partly wrong. Glitch artifacts, scanlines, and low-resolution JPEG compression are treated as poetic texture.
By 2014–2016, vaporwave had become a visual language independent of the music: applied to fashion, illustration, and graphic design as a form of ironic nostalgia for early digital culture. Its critique of consumer capitalism is often subtle: presenting the ephemera of late-1980s and 1990s commercial culture in a context that makes it feel both beautiful and hollow.

Two written calls, seven meters, and when to walk away
Oversaturated to the point of being a meme, so the angle carries it. Roman busts, Windows 95 chrome and pink-and-teal are exhausted as a checklist, and using all three at once signals a search result rather than a point of view. Take one artefact and go deep. Genuine period detritus beats any modern pastiche of it.
Only where the audience is fluent enough to catch the irony being inverted: it was built as a critique of consumer capitalism and is now used to sell things, which insiders clocked years ago. Right for music, internet-native culture, anything with a knowing audience. Wrong as a corporate nostalgia skin, where the joke lands on the brand rather than with it.
Digital collage. Found imagery, not original production.
Extremely online and oversaturated. Needs a real angle to not be a meme.
Compositing found imagery cleanly is a learnable skill.
Extremely online and memeified. A shallow version reads as a joke.

Where it stands now, and what it costs you to use it
Vaporwave is over as a movement and permanent as a vocabulary. The music scene that produced it largely dissolved by the late 2010s, but the palette, the Helvetica-on-marble-bust move and the mall imagery are now shorthand anyone can read.
That legibility is the trap. It was built as a critique of consumer capitalism and is now used to sell things, which insiders clocked years ago. If you use it commercially, use it knowing the irony has been inverted, because the audience who cares will notice.

Vaporwave is an internet-born aesthetic (circa 2011) defined by pastel colors, 1990s consumer nostalgia, glitch artifacts, and classical sculpture placed in digital environments. It started as a music microgenre critiquing consumer capitalism through ironic recontextualization of corporate and mall culture.
Vaporwave's palette is pastel-light: lavender (#C3A6E0), hot pink (#FF00FF at reduced saturation), electric blue (#00FFFF), mint green, and salmon: against white or near-white. The mood is dreamy and slightly washed-out, in contrast to synthwave's vivid neon-on-black darkness.
Vaporwave is specifically nostalgic for 1980s–90s consumer and digital culture, with an ironic critical dimension. Lo-fi aesthetic (lo-fi hip hop, chill study beats) is a separate tradition focused on warmth, grain, and analog imperfection: emotionally cozy rather than uncanny or satirical.
