The setup
Director's note
Reduce everything to volume and colour. Choose simple forms, paint or style them in the palette, and light them with hard direction so each face reads as one tone. Frame square-on or in a low three-quarter view, keep the background a single colour and add grain in the grade. No soft light, no busy backgrounds and no fine detail competing with the shapes.
